It hasn’t felt like much of any season around here, but I did find ‘welcome to sunshine city’ scribbled in a notepad when I was picking up the other day, we’ve bought the hanging plants for our porch that will be our annual sacrifice to the summer, and the pools are now open. It’s not summer yet, officially, but we are gonna call it that, because the world is disorienting and I just don’t care anymore, friend. So, in that spirit, here’s a rundown of all the playlists I’ve got going this season, my favorite one from a music standpoint.
This one will be full of all the big dumb summer songs I can find this summer. I love big dumb summer songs, you know this.
Summer, hard as it tries, cannot be all big dumb summer songs. Sometimes we have to get somber. Or sad. Or disappointed. You know this.
15 or so years of summer mixes, distilled down to just the good stuff for whichever part of the day they may sound best.
I’m old, so the part of the summer that’s most appealing to me is the part where I am done with social obligations and can sort of stare into the middle distance and romanticize my day/life. What I’m saying is that this is my favorite of the summer mixes.
You know every single word of every song on this here playlist, friend. You didn’t mean to memorize them, but it happened because you were alive and living through summer as a youth at one point in your life. Them’s the breaks.
A bbq mix for those who know their bbq has to start a 5pm and has a hard stop at 7:30pm. It is me. I am those people.
More or less this is just all the ‘indie’ (whatever that means) rock music I enjoyed from like 2002 through 2016-ish? But summer!
Not sure how to explain the sound of this playlist other than it involves a certain sort of drum beat/sound and it makes me happy, generally.
A playlist that’s just the musical equivalent of that moment you come in from some extremely unnecessary heat and get absolutely blasted in the face by life-saving cold air.
Do you want to live in a Springsteen/Springsteen-adjacent song? Cool, man, me too.
My latest little obsession, a playlist that’s supposed to sound like neon lights and nostalgia. I’ll keep working at it, because these upcoming very sweaty hours aren’t gonna pass themselves.
Thunderstorm music. Because Thunderstorm Season is very exciting.
A playlist full of the sort of emo-adjacent rock and roll that an elder emo like me has been gravitating towards as they really embrace their elderness. See! Not just a phase!
You remember what 2012ish sounded like? Me too, comrade.
Songs for when you just give in to the slow drip of time that takes over during summer, essentially.
I’ll be back at some point to share things that I’ve been liking lately/the last few months/however long it’s been (a long while!) since I’ve had the motivation to post anything. Until then, please be well and take care.
